District Assembly Workshops
Workshops are scheduled for Saturday, March 31, 2012 (see times below).

When making your workshop selections on the registration form, please select one workshop from each of the one-hour workshop sessions, OR one workshop from the two-hour workshop session.

One-Hour Worshops - Session 1 (2:15-3:15 pm):

Be Heard AND Ask Questions:  You have been hearing and will continue to hear more about Districts in the MidAmerica Region moving to a Regional governance structure in 2013.  This can’t happen without you.  This workshop is a chance to voice your concerns, ask your questions, and share your support.  We will answer what we can and take your questions and concerns back to the Transition Team to get answers for you.  Please join us for a look at the future of Unitarian Universalism in our area.  The Transition Team is working to draft a new governance structure by August 2012, please come and share with us. Presenters: Amy Taylor, president, and other Heartland Board members

Conversation with Youth:  Mark Morrison-Reed will enter into conversation with the youth attending District Assembly and with any youth advisors. It will be a chance for deep conversation about the issues facing Unitarian Universalism today.  Presenter: Rev. Dr. Mark Morrison-Reed

Next Steps in UU Faith Formation:  The next steps in UU faith development call us to become lifelong learning communities.  Informed by the Faith Formation 2020 study, the lifelong learning network model of 24/7/365, face-to-face, and virtual learning opportunities in our congregations will engage your multigenerational community in new and exciting ways. Presenter: Nancy Combs-Morgan, Heartland District Faith Development Director/MidAmerica Coordinator of Emerging Youth and Young Adult Ministries

One-Hour Workshops - Session 2 (3:15-4:15 pm):

Transition Experience for Youth:  What are some of our church secrets for creating thoughtful young people of integrity and life-long Unitarian Universalists?  A panel of our Heartland District religious educators and youth will discuss Our Whole Lives, Coming of Age and other life-shaping UU opportunities that many of our youth experience in our congregations. Presenters: Lifespan Religious Education Committee:  Teresa Putnam, Barb Friedland, Stacey Stone, Nadine Tringali, Kathy Silver, Natalie Spriggs-Trobridge, Shannon Harper

Transformative Youth Ministry:  Come and hear the personal narratives of youth and adult leaders who are part of sustaining, enduring and transformative youth ministry in their congregations.  Here their stories, be inspired by their ideas and get new resources to help you achieve transformative youth ministry in your congregation. Presenters: Nancy Combs-Morgan, MidAmerica Coordinator of Emerging Youth and Young Adult Ministries and members of the District Youth Steering Committee (DYSC)

Conflict: Basics and More:  Conflict comes to all of us, individuals and congregations alike. Learn levels of conflict, different conflict styles, and tools and techniques to help you out when living out our covenants with one another go awry. Presenter: Rev. Dr. Lisa Presley, Heartland District Executive

Two-Hour Workshops (2:15-4:30 pm):

Gathered Here:  You and your congregation are invited to join UUs across the continent discovering our common aspirations and unleashing the power of our faith.  We will capture meaningful moments, times of growth and positive developments in UU congregations or communities.  We will reflect on how these positive experiences are relevant to our larger faith and how they might be applied to our collective future.  Your input will be forwarded to UUA leadership to provide the basis for their planning.  There will be an opportunity to sign up to take this experience to your own congregation or UU community.  Presenter: Sara Clavez, UU Fellowship of Midland, MI

Heartland Immigration Issues and Actions:  Let’s share!  We will discuss Heartland area immigration issues, learn what congregations are doing to support our UUA immigration initiatives, and explore collaboration and coordination of local activities, particularly during the week of General Assembly. Presenters: Rev. Deane Oliva, UU Church of Flint, MI; Rev. Dennis McCarty, UU Congregation of Columbus, IN; Margaret Holmes Rovner, UU Church of Greater Lansing, MI; Renee Swanson, UU Church of Greater Lansing, MI; Shalimar Penha Manwani, UU Church of Bloomington, IN; and Jeannie Miernik, Network Coordinator, Michigan UU Social Justice Network (MUUSJN)

Pathway from Scarcity to Abundance:  Today, more than ever, our congregations must be effective in their stewardship and empowered and well-equipped in their fund raising efforts. How can we create and sustain a culture of generosity? What will enable us to tap our financial potential in support of our mission and ministries? Together we will explore the terrain and take the first steps on the pathway to a brighter and prosperous future. Presenter: Laurel Amabile, UUA Annual Program Fund Director

Leading with Love:  Do you have leaders within your congregation that you would like to develop? This workshop has three outcomes: 1) Share our process for identifying leaders;  2) Discuss our curriculum, assessments to identify personal and organization leadership characteristics; and 3) Describe how we built leadership consulting skills which our leaders used to identify and complete projects which benefited our congregation.  Our curriculum, assessments, and a few leadership skills we use will be shared. Presenter: Ann Jones, First UU Congregation of Ann Arbor MI

Shared Leadership: A Journey Through Consensus:  Based on resources gathered and published by Elizabeth Fisher (author of "Rise Up and Call Her Name" curriculum), this workshop focuses on small congregation or small group governance using the principles of Shared Leadership and the process of consensus.  How to nurture the mind, heart and soul of a group while still accomplishing tasks and goals. Presenter: Gretchen Ohmann, Berrien UU Fellowship, St. Joseph, MI

How a Local Cluster Works:  The UU Council of Cincinnati is over 25 years old. Six congregations work together to provide UUs opportunities that smaller, individual congregations might not be able to provide. We sponsored all-city worship services and a conference on Immigration March 3-4, 2011 providing readiness for Justice GA. We sponsor classes, foster communication, encourage resource sharing and provide joint marketing. The UU Council is also represented in the interfaith organization called MARCC (Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati), which has 16 faith communities/denominations involved in social justice. Presenters: Mary Jane Pierson, Northern Hills UU Fellowship, Cincinnati, OH; and Rae Jane Araujo, Heritage UU Church, Cincinnati, OH

Building Community Through Chalice Circles:
Through the Chalice Circle Program, the lay leadership provides an opportunity for participants to be a part of the church's small group ministry.  Chalice Circles encourage people in their spiritual growth and help them develop relationships of substance and depth.  The workshop will begin with a brief history of the program's development, its organizational structure and an overview of the facilitator's handbook.  Key components (logistics, writing session content, facilitator training, service projects) and key activities such as deep listening and developing group covenants will also be presented.  Presenters:  Sally Hattig and Catherine Olson, First UU Congregation of Ann Arbor, MI
